The Secret to Living Longer

How to Live Longer, Happier, and Freer by Designing Your Own "Blue Zone."

Ever wonder why some people seem to be thriving well into their 90s, while others are worn out by 60? What’s their secret hack for a long, healthy, free life? Well, It’s not about magic pills, expensive health plans, or crazy workout regimens.

It’s about something surprisingly simple: how you design your life and community.

In certain regions around the world, people consistently live longer, healthier lives. We call these places "Blue Zones," but here’s the good thing: You don’t have to move to a remote village in Japan or a sunny town in Italy to benefit. You can create your own Blue Zone wherever you are. And the best part of this? It aligns perfectly with living a life of freedom and purpose.

Let’s explore what makes these communities so unique and how you can sprinkle some of that Blue Zone magic into your own life.

Move Naturally

Forget marathon training or high-intensity workouts if that’s not your strong suit – I know it isn’t mine. The world’s healthiest people integrate natural movement into their daily lives. They walk, garden, cook, clean, and just keep moving. No gym memberships required.

Easy ways to implement this would be through short walks after you eat, with bonus points if you do it with someone you love. If you’re paying the kid down your street to mow your lawn every week maybe it’s time to take the job up yourself.  Natural movement can also be as simple as taking the stairs instead of the elevator at work. If you’re still not sure how you will do this because of where you live, consider purchasing a treadmill or walking pad. Throw on your favorite show and just start stepping.

Movement doesn’t have to be a chore. Make it fun, make it social, and let it become part of your daily rhythm.

Purpose: Know Your "Why"

In these long-living communities, everyone has a reason to get up in the morning. Whether it’s caring for family, pursuing a passion, or contributing to the community, having a sense of purpose adds years to your life.

Freedomology Tip: Your "why" doesn’t have to be grand or world-changing. It just has to matter to you. Take time to reflect on what lights you up, what you’re good at, and how you can weave that into your daily life.

Connection: Find Your Tribe

One of the biggest factors in these healthy communities? Strong social bonds. They prioritize family, friends, and belonging to a supportive network.

How to Build Your Own Tribe:

  • Reach out to old friends you’ve lost touch with.

  • Join a club, group, or online community that shares your interests.

  • Create regular meetups with people who inspire and support you.

Freedom is better when shared. Surround yourself with people who make you laugh, challenge you to grow, and remind you what life’s all about. I can not stress enough the importance of having people on your side that actually want to see you improve. It always sounds cheesy but you are the company you keep.

Stress Less, Live More

Here’s a crazy concept: Chronic stress is not your friend. The healthiest communities know how to decompress and unwind every day. They take time to pause, reflect, and breathe.

The simplest ways you can decompress is by practicing a daily ritual – could be meditation, prayer, gratitude journaling. If you have a busy schedule like myself do this for five minutes a day to start and see how such a small amount of time can drastically impact you. Try out 10 minutes of silence every day, your drive to work could be a good time for this, just letting your thoughts flow and finding calm within them. Those examples are more serious routes, my personal favorite is laughing. Watch your favorite funny show, read a comic, listen to the funniest podcast you can find or call up the friend you know who never fails to put a smile on your face.

When you reduce stress, you make space for more passions, creativity, and joy.

Eat Like You Care About Yourself

No crazy diets here. The people in these long-living communities eat mostly whole, plant-based foods, with occasional indulgences. They savor their meals, eat until they’re about 80% full, and enjoy food as a social experience.

Preaching intuitive eating is a constant thing for me. Your meals should be filled with whole foods. Slow down and actually taste your food, it’s not a race.

One of my favorite ways to eat is through Carb Fasting. It drives me to results without feeling restrictive. Unlike other diets that aren’t sustainable, Carb Fasting has changed the way I see and consume food.

Food is fuel, but it’s also one of life’s great pleasures. Treat it that way.
